United Kingdom

• Lancaster Polish community

  The Lancaster Polish community has existed since the late 1940s when Polish people were liberated from German prisoner of war camps. These were followed by people escaping labour camps in Russia, or escaping the communist regime. Family and friends have slowly joined them over the decades. And since the early 2000s, the Polish community in Lancaster has grown with recent waves of economic migrants. The Polish community is a thriving community of all ages. Great emphasis is placed on teaching Polish, but also teaching English to adults. The community was enthusiastic about helping in the primary research for the WorKit project, with more women (many of whom are looking for part time work because of family commitments) completing the questionnaires than the men.

  The British Red Cross are a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. Currently a national strategy to accommodate asylum seekers from Syria is an important part of their work. The centre in Preston deals with many asylum seekers and refugees many of whom are from Africa and the Middle East, many of whom are single Young men. This cohort is looking for work, and therefore the WorkIt project will be especially beneficial to them.
